FREE SPIRIT Part 1

For Tamesha tonight was a very big night. Tonight she would try to summon her first spirit. Tamesha was a young street mage. She had only recently learned about her awakened powers. After learning a few spells she decided she was ready to call upon a spirit to be her astral partner. She had gone to the only contact she knew (an Owl shaman named Starfeather) and asked her for assistance in the setup for the ritual. After Starfeather left, Tamesha began the calming techniques she had learned, she would need total concentration to pull this off. After she thought she was calm enough she stepped into the hermetic circle and began the ritual. It seemed to be going well enough as she began the final part of the ritual. She chanted, "Come forth oh spirit, come forth to the plane of existence," her voice grew louder as the chant neared its close. This was the part she feared most Starfeather had said that when the time came a name would come to her and that was the name she must call out to finish the ritual. Suddenly it came to her, "Come forth Jareth."

Jareth was floating around somewhere in the outer regions of the astral plane when he felt the first tug. He knew someone in the physical plane was "summoning" him to be their helper, and he wasn’t sure he liked it. He tries to fight it but the pull became more powerful and he knew there was nothing he could do to stop it. He let out a final scream as he was sucked from the astral plane into physical existence.

She had done it, she had really summoned a spirit, and there it was floating in front of her. "So what kind of spirit are you anyway?" she asked.

"I’m an evoker spirit," he answered her matter-of-factly.

"So does that mean when I get into deep drek you’ll be able to throw a fireball or something and save my butt?" she asked.

"Yeah I suppose I could," he replied. She looked at him quizzically

"What do you mean you suppose you could I’m your master I know your true name you don’t have a choice but to obey me, right?" By the way she said that he knew she was only a beginner. That was a good thing, because all he would have had to do was pick his moment, and fry her before she could call out his true name to stop him. He thought about doing it then and there, there was already spell residue so no one would notice if he fried her, they would just think her spell had backfired. As he was about to gather the mana for the spell he noticed that this place was protected by wards put in place by a much more powerful magician, or maybe a shaman and he didn’t want to alert anyone else of what he was about to do. So he decided to wait for a more opportune time.

The ritual had drained a lot out of her and she didn’t want to stand here and argue with what was supposed to be her helper. She commanded the spirit to follow her back to her doss so she could get some shuteye.

As soon as they reached the apartment Tamesha (that’s what she had told him to call her) fell asleep. This was his chance, and he intended to take it. He crept into her room and threw a mana bolt into her head. He was sure she was dead but just for added measure he threw another mana bolt into her chest.

He had done it, he was a free spirit, no one knew his true name and he intended to keep it that way. He would need another name that he could tell others to call him. He flipped threw Tamesha’s date book looking for a suitable name. As he was flipping he found the perfect name, Jay THE END
